As a parent of a child with severe nonverbal autism and epilepsy, I know firsthand the challenges and opportunities of navigating complex health conditions. That's why, at the age of 50-something 😉, I decided to pursue a Master of Science Nutritional Science (Biomedical Tract) focusing on nutraceuticals and genetics from The University of Texas at Austin. I wanted to deepen my understanding of how nutrients can affect gene expression, metabolic pathways, and immune function and how this knowledge can be applied to improve health outcomes. I also wanted to explore the potential benefits of specific nutrients as nutraceuticals for addressing the underlying causes of my child’s condition, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and gut dysbiosis. Returning to school was difficult, especially since the last time I was in a collegiate setting was in 1993, earning an undergrad degree from Texas A&M University plus the time and complexity of caring for a medically complex child. But it was also one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I learned to critically evaluate scientific research, design experiments, analyze data, and communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences. I also met inspiring mentors, colleagues, and clients who share my passion for integrative health and holistic wellness. I can say I get the meaning of Socrates’ quote, "I know that I am intelligent because I know that I know nothing." -I learned enough to know I haven’t learned enough and will continue the quest to help my son and others. I am grateful for the support and encouragement of my husband, Roby Wilson , my parents Kathryn and Virgil Yoakum , and close friends! In the words of one of my mentors, “We should keep learning until we take our last breath” 😂 #nutrition #autism #epilepsy #integrativehealth #lifelonglearning
