Val Meets Met: What Is COMT—and Why Should You Know About It?
What COMT does, why some people are called “slow,” “intermediate,” or “fast,” and what your combination may—or may not—mean for stress, focus, mood, and dopamine.
Catechol-O-Methyltransferase — Now Say That Three Times!
Don’t worry, from here on out we’ll just call it COMT.

The easiest way to think about COMT is as part of your body’s chemical cleanup and recycling system. Its job is to help break down certain compounds called catechols, including several important brain chemicals such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine.
COMT stands for catechol-O-methyltransferase. The COMT gene provides the instructions your cells use to make the COMT enzyme. How quickly COMT does that job varies from person to person. A common genetic variation can result in COMT activity generally described as slow, intermediate, or fast. And that’s where Val and Met enter the story.
So, Who Are Val and Met?

Val and Met are two versions of a common COMT gene variant called Val158Met. Val makes COMT more active, so catecholamines are broken down faster. Met makes COMT less active, so they are broken down more slowly.
That gives us the three common COMT “speeds”:
Val/Val = fast | Met/Met = slow | Val/Met = intermediate
Val/Val: Fast COMT
If you have Val/Val, you inherited a Val copy from both parents.
Val/Val is associated with higher COMT activity, meaning catecholamines such as dopamine are generally broken down more quickly.
In the prefrontal cortex, that can mean lower dopamine availability compared with Val/Met or Met/Met. That does not automatically mean “low dopamine” or poor brain function. It simply means your COMT enzyme tends to work faster.
What Val/Val May Look Like
Because Val/Val clears dopamine more quickly, some people may show tendencies such as:

better performance under stress or pressure
greater cognitive flexibility and easier task-switching
less tendency to get mentally “stuck” on thoughts
possible difficulty with sustained focus or working memory when dopamine runs too low
greater sensitivity to anything that further lowers dopamine
These are tendencies, not symptoms or guarantees. COMT is only one small piece of a much larger genetic and neurological picture.
Met/Met: Slow COMT
If you have Met/Met, you inherited a Met copy from both parents.
Met/Met is associated with lower COMT activity, meaning catecholamines such as dopamine are generally broken down more slowly.
In the prefrontal cortex, that can mean higher dopamine availability compared with Val/Met or Val/Val.
What Met/Met May Look Like
Some people with Met/Met may be more prone to:

rumination or getting “stuck” on thoughts
feeling overwhelmed under high stress
stronger emotional reactivity
better sustained focus or working memory under the right conditions
greater sensitivity to stimulants or anything that further increases catecholamines
Again, these are possible tendencies, not guaranteed symptoms. COMT is only one factor among many that influence mood, attention, and stress response.
Val/Met: Intermediate COMT
If you have Val/Met, you inherited one Val copy and one Met copy.
Val/Met is associated with intermediate COMT activity, meaning catecholamines such as dopamine are generally broken down at a moderate rate.
In the prefrontal cortex, dopamine availability typically falls between Val/Val and Met/Met.
What Val/Met May Look Like
Some people with Val/Met may show tendencies such as:
a balance between sustained focus and cognitive flexibility
moderate stress tolerance
less tendency toward extremes in dopamine-related effects
the ability to adapt reasonably well between calm and stressful situations
responses that may shift more noticeably depending on sleep, stress, hormones, medications, and other genes
Again, these are possible tendencies, not guaranteed symptoms. COMT is only one factor among many that influence mood, attention, and stress response.
Why Is Knowing Your COMT Important?
Because it can provide one more clue about how your brain handles dopamine and stress—
COMT has become a hot topic in psychiatry because it sits right in the middle of dopamine, stress, mood, and executive function.
It is especially important in the prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain involved in focus, working memory, decision-making, impulse control, and emotional regulation. Because COMT helps regulate dopamine in this area, researchers have been studying whether differences in COMT activity help explain why people can respond differently to stress, medications, and changes in dopamine.
COMT has been studied in connection with ADHD, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, impulsivity, addiction, cognition, and medication response. That has made it particularly interesting in the growing field of pharmacogenomics—using genetics to better understand differences between individuals and, ultimately, personalize treatment.
But COMT is one piece of a very complicated puzzle. Having Val/Val, Val/Met, or Met/Met does not diagnose a psychiatric condition, predict someone's personality, or tell a doctor which medication will work. The associations are often small and can change depending on stress, sex, hormones, other genes, medications, and environment.
COMT is only one piece of the puzzle.
